Migrating from Wordpress

The Wordpress community is all over the place right now. In-fighting and legal wrangling, combined with the huge changes to the editor experience over the past few years, have lots of businesses considering alternatives.

I’m not going to go into the background on this but here is a good primers for the #hotdrama going on in the Wordpress community right now

We moved away from Wordpress as a default choice for Content Management over 9 years ago. Wordpress has its pros and cons (like every system), but in our opinion, there are a lot of alternatives which can offer a better author experience, development experience, and features.

Craft CMS

We make no secret of how much we love Craft CMS. We’ve been migrating clients to alternative systems since before it was cool. Over the years we’ve moved tens of clients to Craft from Wordpress installations and clients have (almost universally) been delighted with the results.

In the last week Craft CMS have created a new migration tool to help developers easily migrate content from Wordpress to Craft. They’ve also created a starter project on Github and published a guide to help get Wordpress developers up and running on Craft. They’ve also shared posts and stories about people who have transitioned to Craft from Wordpress such as this one

A recent story

I’m going to share a story about an anonymous client on their (very recent) experience of moving to Wordpress - pre drama. The client (we'll reveal who it is when the site launches) was really keen to rebuild their site and use Wordpress due to its familiarity. They had a few other sites which were running on Wordpress and were concerned about any changes or needing to retrain their team.

We worked with them and their team to understand their requirements and what they needed from a CMS. After looking deeply at this, we could see that using the newer versions of Wordpress was going to hinder their team, rather than help it. We presented the options to them and pushed them to make a bold choice. This was a big risk for them, but also for us – as we hadn’t actually won the project at this stage. However we truly believed Craft CMS was the right choice for their project and team.

After going through the features and functionality of Craft, they agreed to go with us and our plan to re-build their site with Craft CMS. Following our design and development work, we handed over the keys to them for content entry and conducted a training session with their team (something we do as standard on all website builds). Here’s what they sent to us the following week:

I've just started uploading content to the website and I LOVE it! It's so so easy to use!

A very happy client
